complex system, n. a system consisting of many parts, which as a whole has behaviors which are difficult to predict and manage; cannot be engineered, but can be modeled and observed for emergent patterns and attributes. (Not to be confused with a complicated system, which is just difficult to understand.)

Researchers of complex systems say that by definition you cannot engineer a complex system. We agree. However, you can engineer within the context of complexity, and you can model the world around you to make better decisions. That's what we do, and we work within the fields of software development, observational research, technology management & quality systems, organizational strategy & operations, education, electronics, and everyday life.
